Skills Refinement and Student Growth

One thing we can always say with certainty is: Practice is the only way to increase skill.
Students in the Art Post are always drawing because it is the only way they will be able to measure the growth from the freshmen through the senior year. Drawing has been, and will always remain a critical way in which the visual artist communicates - whether it's quick, rough sketches that convey bigger ideas - or skillfully rendered pieces put in the portfolio.
If it weren't for the mistakes and awkwardness of those first drawings, we may never truly see the course of our development.
It is
important to note that college boards first look at the creativity and
prolific sketches of potential art students before they evaluate the
level of skill. Simply put, skills can be taught much easier than
creativity and work ethic.
There are a variety of skills the artist must possess if he or she ever intends to pursue a career in art. Near the top of that list is strong
verbal communication. Not only are students required to produce an
exceptional body of work in their portfolios, they are also required to
talk about the pieces. Our portfolio reviews are interactive between
the artist and the reviewers.
